Record-Breaking Solar Craft Finishes US Trip

Again another short article i thought was fascinating on the topic of technological advancement’s, what would you need to do if i didn’t post this ehh? you’d have to find the initial article, and the chances you found it could be slim, so deem yourself lucky that i’ve shared this glorious piece with you.

headset. earphonesThe Solar Impulse aircraft has landed at New York’s JFK airport, having finished its extraordinary trip across the United states. This is a 1st time a solar-driven airplane able to flying in both day and night has attempted to travel across the US.

The landing completes the ultimate leg of that Solar Impulse’s over America transcontinental bid, which started in May.

Earlier in its path, the Solar Impulse plane broke the distance record for solar-powered flight by staying within the air for a full 18 hours.

In 2012, the Solar Impulse airplane became the very first solar-powered craft to complete an inter-continental journey.

The record-breaking airplane was planned and built by project co-founders (and Impulse co-pilots) Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg. The team expect to commend the virtues of renewable energy with their creation.

Here’s more information on headset – http://jamesbros.livejournal.com, review our internet site. Piccard and Borshberg are also behind the ‘Clean Generation’ initiative, which is an attempt to encourage companies and governments to increase and take on sustainable energy resources.

The solar impulse HB-SIA has a similar wingspan as the A340 Airbus, but weighs only 1.6 tonnes (by comparison an A340 weighs, on average, around 370 tonnes). The Impulse’s wing and stabiliser are enclosed with roughly 12,000 solar cells, these make 4 propellers and completely charge the lithium-ion batteries for dark flying. The craft features a top speed of 70 kph (45mph) and a maximum cruising height of 8,500m (28,000ft).

Piccard and Borshberg claim that their next step is to attempt a trip round the world, which they hope will begin in 2015. However, so they can realize this, the twosome must develop an even bigger plane, the HB SIB.

US Secretary of Energy, Ernest Moniz, was there to greet the craft, saying,

“When you look at the Department of Energy’s research programmes and tech visions, it requires many of the same kind of technology developments that these gentlemen have put together in an integrated system to accomplish something that would not have been considered a couple of years ago (…) I feel in 10 years we’re going to see the fruits of every one of these technology changing the world.”

Although a rip within the wing, which caused the pair to cancel their projected Statue of Liberty fly by, the Solar Impulse plane succeeded in its aims. The craft has shattered records, encouraged augmented thinking into renewable power and showed to be a successful creation. Solar powered passenger jets may yet become a good distance off, but the Solar Impulse airplane proves the technology is getting there.
