The Sony NWZ-WH303 is a chunky old pair, but then it has to be to incorporate the 4GB onboard memory. Sling it round your neck and the leather earcups are big enough to double as a nice chin rest. If subtlety is your thing, look elsewhere.

The Sony NWZ-WH303 weighs 292g, which won’t be too noticeable in your bag. It’s worth noting it doesn’t fold up like the Sennheiser PX 200-II or the B&W P3 so it’s not the most portable pair around.

The faux-leather earcups and headband make the Sony NWZ-WH303 a comfy pair to wear – after a while, you can easily forget you’re wearing headphones at all, which is a real plus, especially given how chunky a pair it is.

It also doesn’t make your ears too hot after prolonged wearing, which we’ve found on some other on-ear pairs, like the Sol Republic Tracks HD.

Despite being a bit plasticky, the Sony NWZ-WH303 feels sturdy enough to survive being chucked in a bag along with your other gadgets. The only delicate parts are the controls on the bottom of the right earpiece, but even they should withstand a fair bit of punishment.

So how does it actually sound? Not fantastic, to be honest. There’s a real loss of detail, especially when you play songs through the speakers rather than the headphones. The guitars on AC/DC’s For Those About To Rock (We Salute You) sounded very fuzzy, and this was even more noticeable when pumped up loud. Bass is heavy, but lacks punchiness, and the treble is a bit underwhelming.

They let in a lot of background sound too, which is disappointing for an on-ear pair. Walk around town in them, and you’ll have to crank the volume up to block out the traffic noise. Switch to speaker mode, and they can go loud enough to annoy the bus, or entertain a few pals. But it’s not going to start a party.

The controls are a bit limited. For a start, they’re on the underside of the earcup, which isn’t the most intuitive place for them. They can only control songs stored on the built-in memory, so you can’t use them to control tracks played from an MP3 player.

You can’t fast forward within a song either, you have to skip to the next track or folder. You also can’t play songs from your MP3 player through the Sony NWZ-WH303’s speakers, only tracks stored on the onboard memory. All of which seems a bit of an oversight.

But getting songs onto the flash memory is a doddle. Plug the Sony NWZ-WH303 into your computer, and it’ll appear as an external hard drive would. Then you just drag and drop, or install the Content Transfer program.

The Sony NWZ-WH303 gets full points for ingenuity, and it’s a fair price given that it’s effectively three products in one. But it’s more of a (headphone (www.icomearpiece.co.uk)) jack of all trades, and master of none.

KeyboardsThe second topic of interest for today is keyboards. This is going to be a much more broad and less specific category due to keyboards not being viewed as important as a mouse. What I mean by this is that if you have a cheap or a non-gaming keyboard it does not have as much as an impact as a mouse. Similar to gaming mice, gaming keyboards also have features that are not included in normal keyboards. Some of these features include the ability to light up your keyboard with back-lights, higher quality keys, and higher quality rests for your hands that allow for hours of pain free gaming.

Again similar to mice, these keyboards also have different preference options. These could include features like wired or wireless, which is not as common as mice. Other preference features include whether you have a mechanical keyboard or a standard, which has to do with the keys and how they press, their sensitivity, etc. Mechanical keyboards are usually more expensive than non-mechanical. Back-light color is also a preference instance, but is purely cosmetic.

This is not the most popular or best creative headset, but I think it is neat because of the LEDs, and it also offers some great padding and noise reduction. The padding on this headset allows for hours of un-irritated gaming.

Why does anyone need a noise-cancelling headset?

For a long time people have been telling me that family, love and happiness are the crucial things in life…At present I realized that I can take or leave all that as long as I have this headset in the world.

We�ve all had a day where we�ve been jolted awake by the repetitive dirge of the jackhammer outside our house, you are trying to ignore it and get back sleep, but, as Austin Powers might say �that train has sailed� .

The noise gets louder as you move toward the window. Three blokes are standing in the midst of the road, two are idly chatting and one is pulling the roadway to pieces. They�ve erected a bright yellow barrier in the midst of your road and now two of them are idly chatting whilst a 3rd noisily lays waste to that road outside your house.

In between drilling sessions, you catch small snatches of the conversation, their voices habitually raised to ridiculous levels after years of talking over pneumatic drills.

�So I said to him, �listen mate, if you think for one second that I�m gonna-�

Deep down inside, you hope its the Ghostbuster re-enacting that fabulous scene from �Ghostbusters II, its OK to admit it, embark upon, all of us do it.

You decide to head out for any walk, ostensibly to clear your head and soon discover that the entire street is being �CHUGGA�D�, and suddenly that series 2 episode of Black Books isn�t as funny anymore.

If the above scene is anything you are able to relate to, then your issue has now been answered, if not; allow me to get a bit more precise. There are two distinct forms of noise reduction when it comes to headsets: the first, is known as passive noise cancellation (or reduction, that is certainly more apt), this is basically a very low tech concept, as anything you stick in or over your ears (including your index fingers, bits of toffee popcorn or novelty hamburger-shaped earmuffs) will have a noise cancelling effect. Passive noise cancellation is as low tech as anything you put inside your ear, or cover your ear with. The second type is much more high tech; active noise cancellation actually blocks out outside noise using a low field of white noise, which creates a �sound vacuum� that blocks all sound (sadly including train announcements, enraged motorists and oncoming lorries).

The second type are especially useful if the bespoke workmen are planning on staying a while. Ask the workmen what they�re doing, plus they�ll say something like

�Yeah, busted gas main, you�re lucky we found it, usually because—�
